Heart transplant becomes national priority in Moldova; more country's medical institutions sign partnerships with Ukraine

The Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF), the Timofei Mosneaga Republican Clinical hospital (SCR) and the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine have signed bilateral collaboration memorandums. The documents provide for collaboration in cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, and transplantology, exchange of specialists, joint research projects and access to modern medical technologies and advanced educational programmes.

Present at the event, Minister of Health Emil Ceban highlighted the historical nature of the moment and the importance of developing cardiac transplantation.

‘’The initiation of the national cardiac transplant programme represents a strategic priority for the Ministry of Health. In Moldova, cardiac transplantation is not yet practiced, and the annual need is estimated at 20–25 patients, with potential for growth. Coherent actions and smart investments are needed to develop the field.’’

For his part, the director of SCR Timofei Mosneaga, Andrei Uncuta, said:

‘’All investments made over the years in the development of the Republican Clinical Hospital's capacities prove their value today. The experience gained in the field of transplantation, the legislative framework and the constant support of the Transplant Agency have created a solid foundation for the next step. The system's capabilities and SCR's resources are ready for this goal, and what we need now is a concerted effort by all institutions, USMF, the Ministry of Health, agencies and hospitals in the area. We thank our colleagues from Ukraine for their openness and support; together we will build a clear agenda for the implementation of this national programme.’’

During the conference, information sessions were held by national and international experts on the clinical, technological and organizational aspects of heart transplantation. Participants discussed solutions for expanding the programme, increasing the number of donors, optimizing the logistical circuit and strengthening multidisciplinary teams.

According to the Ministry of Health, by launching the Heart Transplant National Programme, Moldova takes a decisive step towards developing a modern, sustainable and autonomous heart transplant service, strengthening collaboration with centers of excellence in Romania, Ukraine and other European states.
