Moldovan deputy parliament speaker says each decision parliament is to take to bring country closer to EU

Each decision taken by the Moldova’s parliament will bring the country closer to European integration. Deputy Parliament Speaker Doina Gherman has made statements to this effect, who today delivered a speech at the opening of the Conference: Parliament of Moldova – Full Commitment to European Integration. Gherman emphasized that, in the coming years, it is important to enhance support in society for European integration.

"The process of integration into the European Union is neither swift nor simple. But we did not choose this path because it is easy, but because it is ours. Therefore, it is vital to have synergy, harmony, if you want, between presidents, parliament, government, civil society, business environment, academic environment, and citizens at home, as well as those in the Diaspora. What is essential for us as a society is that, in the coming years, we increase support for European integration on behalf citizens," said Doina Gherman.

The deputy parliament speaker recalled the Declaration on the accession of Moldova to the European Union, voted in the previous legislature. She emphasized that the current parliament had a clear goal: "To be the Parliament of Moldova's accession to the European Union," Gherman stressed.

The deputy speaker highlighted the creation of the European Integration Commission headed by an MP of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), Marcel Spataru, emphasizing that it would have the role of bringing all political forces in the country to the discussion table.

"We all need to understand that European integration is a common project, the project of the country, the project of our generation, and this project must unite us, not divide us, regardless of age, ethnicity, language spoken, political color, absolutely everyone must work for the development and transformation of  Moldova," Gherman also said.

The official underlined that the Legislature would promote active parliamentary diplomacy, creating friendship groups with European Union member states.

"We will focus on active parliamentary diplomacy; we will communicate with European offices, but also, importantly, with societies in EU member states. To convince everyone that Moldova deserves and that Moldova's place is in the European family. Why do I say it deserves? Because we believe in meritocracy, we do not seek shortcuts or favors, and the positive assessment of Moldova in the 2025 EU enlargement report is a very good signal. On this path, I want to thank the government, all the institutions that have done their job well, talented, dedicated, and professional people who inspire many other candidate states," Gherman said.

In her closing remarks, Deputy Parliament Speaker Doina Gherman assured that the parliament would honor the promises made to citizens during the electoral campaign:

"We are all here today because the citizens of Moldova, in the last two years, have reaffirmed their commitment to the European path three times. And in the last five years, they have declared five times that Moldova is a European country. With respect and deep gratitude for the choice of the majority of citizens, on behalf of the parliament of Moldova, I want to assure you that each decision we make in this legislature will bring the country closer to European integration.

Our country, Moldova, small as it may be, is equally courageous and has proven many times over that it is not and cannot be only a beneficiary of peace, development, prosperity, but also an architect of them. With good thoughts, with gratitude for the work of everyone in this hall and for all the citizens of Moldova, I sincerely thank you and wish us all success. Success to us all, because we have a lot of work to do and we know exactly what we need to do," concluded Doina Gherman.
