Moldovan deputy PM says Moldova must prove political maturity for EU accession

Moldova must prove political maturity, in order to transform the aspiration of accession to the European Union (EU) into reality. For this process to be reliable, the country needs political stability and consensus on strategic directions, and both the majority and the opposition must be united around the goal of EU accession. Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov has made statements to this effect at the conference titled, Parliament of Moldova – Full Commitment to European Integration.

‘’The accession thus becomes not only a political or economic goal, but also a strategic project that redefines our country's place, Moldova's place, on Europe's political and security map. This change of paradigm requires even more seriousness and coherence on behalf of us. The accession represents a profound transformation in the way the state, economy and institutions work. The parliament has a decisive role in this transformation, ensuring it is well-founded, coherent, and sustainable. In this effort, I am particularly pleased that, in this legislative period, the parliament already has a commission dedicated to European integration. The existence of this commission is a condition for institutional efficiency, and it will be the driving force behind coordinating legislative alignment and the link that will connect the negotiations held by the government with the normative decisions of the Parliament,’’ Gherasimov said.

The deputy prime minister emphasized the importance of the European Integration Commission, created in the current legislature, which will coordinate legislative alignment and ensure the connection between the government's negotiations and the parliament's decisions. The commission will translate European priorities into a coherent legislative agenda, maintain a constant dialogue with European authorities and partners, and ensure the correct transposition of European legislation.

‘’This mission, however, goes far beyond the scope of a single commission; the accession process is truly a country project, and here the parliament, in its entirety, is responsible for protecting and advancing it. For this process to be credible to all, it needs political stability, legislative coherence and at least a minimum consensus on the strategic directions we have chosen and included in Moldova’s Constitution. In this regard, it is essential that both the majority and the opposition are united around the fundamental objective, namely EU accession. The opposition also has an important role in maintaining the quality of reforms, and I am glad it is included in this parliamentary commission, in order to ensure transparency and monitor the cabinet. This role, once again, does not weaken the process, but strengthens it, so that our accession is one of assumed political maturity. This political maturity is characteristic of all consolidated democracies of the European Union. This is a message that all chief negotiators have asked me to convey to our citizens, as I have had multiple discussions today as well,’’ Gherasimov added.

The deputy PM drew attention to the fact that the country was at a historic moment: decisions, cooperation, and the quality of reforms will determine not only the speed of EU integration, but also the direction of development for Moldova for many generations.

‘’Today, our country is facing a window of opportunity like never seen before in our modern history. It is the result of a friendly European context and clear political will, both here in Chisinau and in Brussels, the result of support on behalf of all 27 member states, but also, of course, of the determination proved by our institutions during a period characterized by very quick changes. All these create a unique moment where coherent steps, rapid steps, can transform this chance that history offers us into a reality, namely Moldova's accession to the European Union. And because such windows do not remain open for long, our responsibility is to use it now with wisdom, unity and courage,’’ Gherasimov stressed.

The event takes place in the context of the publication of the European Commission's Enlargement Report on November 4, 2025, which confirms the substantial progress of Moldova over the last 12 months and highlights the need to speed up legislative alignment to European standards.

The conference brings together representatives of the parliament, the government, the European Parliament's Office in Chisinau, the EU Delegation, development partners, local authorities, academia, civil society organizations and the media.
