Chișinău authorities prepare for opening negotiations on first cluster of chapters - Fundamental Values

Chișinău authorities are preparing for the opening of negotiations on the first cluster of chapters - Fundamental Values. Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov made the statement today.

According to the official, the teams of civil servants working on these documents in the working groups have prepared the negotiation position drafts over the past weeks, which were discussed last week by the members of the Interinstitutional Council and the Cabinet of Ministers.

“To ensure a transparent and inclusive process, we also invited civil society, business associations, the academic environment, and political parties to discussions last week. The negotiation position is the key document through which the Republic of Moldova details the manner and timelines it aims to adopt and implement the European norms and standards that all EU member states adhere to,” stated Cristina Gherasimov.

The Deputy Prime Minister mentioned that the negotiation position is developed for each policy chapter of the EU acquis.

“Fundamental Values cluster is the group of chapters with which we open negotiations and the last one we will close. The progress recorded in these chapters, which includes fundamental elements such as rule of law, justice, public administration reform and the functioning of democratic institutions will determine the pace at which Moldova's EU accession negotiations will proceed,” emphasized Cristina Gherasimov.

On June 25, 2024, the Republic of Moldova began its EU accession negotiations. These were officially launched during an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg. Currently, authorities are coordinating the bilateral screening stage. The actual negotiations are set to start this year. Authorities in Chișinău have aimed for Moldova to become part of the EU by 2030.
