2026 Enlargement Report // Moldovan PM says country's goal to provisionally close negotiations in early 2028 ambitious, but achievable

The European Commission today published the Enlargement Report, assessing the official progress of the ten countries currently in the accession process, including Moldova. After the document was presented, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said that, in its report, the Commission directly says that the country’s goal of provisionally closing negotiations in early 2028 is ambitious, but achievable, if Moldova maintains the pace of reforms.

The PM said that he had received Moldova’s report today from EU Ambassador Iwona Piórko.

Vasile Tofan emphasized that, based on the report, the Commission ranks Moldova among the four most advanced countries in the accession process and confirms that the reforms carried out in recent years had brought the country closer than ever to its goal.

“The assessment is very positive: the Commission ranks us among the four most advanced countries in the process and confirms that the reforms carried out in recent years have brought us closer than ever to our goal. The Commission says directly that our goal of provisionally closing negotiations in early 2028 is ambitious, but achievable, if we maintain the pace of reforms,” Vasile Tofan said.

The official stressed that the result achieved represented important recognition for Moldova and for everyone who worked toward it—in institutions and throughout society, including during an extremely difficult period.

“We are pleased with the result, but we are not slowing down. European integration is our national project and depends, above all, on how well we do our work at home,” Vasile Tofan concluded.

The European Commission published the 2026 Enlargement Report on November 4, including an assessment of the progress made by Moldova in the accession process. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that Moldova was accelerating the pace of reforms and that the European Union could issue an opinion on the country’s progress in the accession process by the end of 2026.
