Moldovan PM, EU official approach important issues

The Republic of Moldova is advancing on the path of European integration, the authorities in Chișinău and those in Brussels said. When will Moldova join the European Union? Prime Minister Dorin Recean claims that this will happen in four years. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos believes that accession will take place sooner.

The two officials also made a bet during a press conference in Chișinău on the Growth Plan Agreement for Moldova.

Dorin Recean: “Through external solidarity and internal unity, which we have a duty as a society to strengthen, we will manage to be ready to become an EU member state not in ten years, not in twenty years, but in four years. Moldova can.”

Marta Kos: “I believe so strongly in the future of Moldova within the EU and my vision is to build this future together. You said four years. You know I'm very competitive; if you say four years, I say three years and ten months. Let's bet and see who wins.”

The Republic of Moldova submitted the application for EU membership in March 2022. In June of the same year, Moldova became a candidate country for accession, and in December 2023, the European Council decided to open accession negotiations for Moldova and Ukraine.

On 9 May, Recean and Marta Kos signed a Facility Agreement between the European Commission and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on specific means of implementing the support provided by the European Union within the reform and growth mechanism for Moldova.
