Moldovan President attends ceremony commemorating World War II victims
Head of State Maia Sandu participated today in the event commemorating those who lost their lives in World War II. During the solemn ceremony held at Eternity memorial complex, Maia Sandu said that today, on 9 May we gather to commemorate one of the most painful pages in human history – a war in which over 70 million people died.
"Peace and victory against tyranny were made possible through the courage and sacrifice of our predecessors, as well as the unity shown by the countries that opposed Nazism. Moldova was part of the tragedy but also part of the Victory of Peace," the head of state said.
The official also emphasized that after 1945, Europe chose a different path. "It opted for reconciliation. It chose to turn wounds into bridges between nations. For eight decades, the states that are part of the European Union have experienced the longest period of peace in their history. Moldova aspires to be part of this family – not just for economic development, but especially to preserve peace, democracy and freedom," Maia Sandu said.
In conclusion, the president reaffirmed the strong commitment of the Republic of Moldova to defend fundamental human values: "We will stand on the side of freedom, memory and truth. Because this is the lesson of the past 80 years: regardless of times, regardless of threats, good must be defended. Not with fear. But with dignity. Evil can be done alone, but good and peace can only be achieved together. That's how we honor the past. That's how we build the future. And that's how we will keep peace."
Every year on 9 May, the Republic of Moldova commemorates the victims of World War II. Over 56,000 Moldovans lost their lives on the front. Throughout the country, events are held dedicated to the heroes who fought to defend peace and at the cost of their lives, fought against Nazism and fascism.
