Sixth EU-Moldova Energy Dialogue Meeting held in Chisinau

Moldova is proud to be a reliable partner at the eastern border of the European Union. We have taken an active role not only in ensuring our own energy security, but also in promoting regional stability in an extremely complex geopolitical context. Minister of Energy, Dorin Junghietu made statements to this effect at a news conference held today jointly with Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, at the conclusion of the sixth high-level meeting of the European Union – Republic of Moldova Energy Dialogue.

“Today's agenda included both the challenges and opportunities we have. From securing supply and safeguarding markets to developing renewable energy sources and accelerating our integration within the European Union. I express my sincere gratitude to the European Union for the constant support provided to Moldova during this period of deep transformation. The energy future of Moldova naturally lies within the European family,” noted Junghietu.

For his part, Dan Jørgensen said that the European Union collaborated with the government of Moldova, so that people have access to secure energy and lower invoices. “We will invest, in order to help your country become more resilient and energy independent. The goal is for each citizen to more easily control their consumption and pay less for energy,” said the European official.

“Among the already achieved progress, there is the connection of Moldova's power grid to the European system, a measure that allows covering up to 70 per cent of the electricity need during peak periods. Moldova continues to take determined steps to reduce its dependency on unreliable external energy sources,” noted Dan Jørgensen.

The energy situation during the summer, preparations for the winter season and investments to enhance Moldova’s energy independence were among the topics addressed today at the sixth high-level meeting of the European Union – Moldova Energy Dialogue.

At the meeting, the commissioner reiterated the EU's unwavering support for overcoming the crisis situation, recalling the Comprehensive Strategy over two years for energy independence and resilience (250 million euros support) and the Growth Plan (valued at 1.9 billion euros), which will contribute to identifying long-term solutions.

European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen is on a working visit to Chisinau on June 5. The visit started with a trip to one of the vulnerable households benefiting from energy efficiency renovation works supported by European programmes. These interventions will help the family reduce heating invoices and electricity consumption.

Throughout the day, Commissioner Jørgensen had a meeting with Prime Minister Dorin Recean, during which key topics on Moldova’s European integration were tackled.

The Commissioner's agenda will end with a visit to a business in a rural area, that has developed with the support of the European Union by adopting modern technologies.
