The Republic of Moldova and Ireland will negotiate a Social Security Agreement that will allow Moldovan citizens working in Ireland to benefit from pensions and other social benefits. The Foreign Policy Committee approved the consultative opinion on initiating negotiations and signing the document.

The agreement will establish common rules for coordinating the social security systems of the Republic of Moldova and Ireland, so that people who work or have worked in the two countries, particularly migrant workers, can benefit from the benefits provided for in the document. These include old-age pensions, disability pensions resulting from a general medical condition, disability pensions and allowances following workplace accidents or occupational diseases, as well as survivors’ pensions.

Insurance periods completed in the two states may be aggregated to meet the conditions required for granting benefits. At the same time, each country will calculate and pay the benefit corresponding to the insurance periods completed in accordance with its own legislation.

The negotiation of the document will be coordinated by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. After signing, the Agreement will be submitted to the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova for ratification.

According to data from the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Ireland, approximately 30,000 Moldovan citizens are currently residing in the country.

So far, the Republic of Moldova has concluded 23 social security agreements, 19 of which are applicable when determining social benefits.
