Republic of Moldova to conclude social security agreement with Ireland
Moldovans who have worked in Ireland will be eligible for pensions and other social benefits. Members of the Cabinet of Ministers today approved the draft decision on launching negotiations and approving the signing of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of Ireland on social security.
The agreement will establish common rules for coordinating the social security systems of the Republic of Moldova and Ireland, so that people who work or have worked in the two countries, particularly migrant workers, can benefit from the benefits provided for in the document. These include old-age pensions, disability pensions resulting from a general medical condition, disability pensions and allowances following workplace accidents or occupational diseases, as well as survivors' pensions.
“We have good news, especially for the diaspora and Moldovan citizens living and working in Ireland. Approximately 30,000 Moldovan citizens live in this country, making our diaspora a sizeable one. Many of them contribute to Ireland’s social security system through their work, and we must ensure that the rights arising from these contributions are protected. We hope to be able to sign the agreement in November. This is an important step toward protecting the rights of our citizens who have worked both in the Republic of Moldova and in Ireland,” emphasized Natalia Plugaru, Minister of Labour and Social Protection.
Insurance periods completed in the two states will be able to be combined to meet the conditions required for granting benefits. At the same time, each country will calculate and pay the benefit corresponding to the insurance periods completed in accordance with its own legislation.
Negotiations on the document will be coordinated by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. After signing, the Agreement will be submitted to Parliament for ratification.
So far, the Republic of Moldova has concluded 23 social security agreements, 19 of which are applicable to the determination of social benefits.
