The heroes who fought for the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova in the Dniester war were commemorated today through a Peace March. Prime Minister Dorin Recean participated in the event.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the 1992 events were a test of our people's resilience and willpower, and since then, the Republic of Moldova has followed the democratic path. “Today, we honored the heroes who, at those moments, defended the independence of the Republic of Moldova. Let's preserve the memory of those who defended our nation, the right to live in peace, and our ability to choose our future,” he said.

Recean said that in December 2024, a special law was voted through which the state officially acknowledges for the first time the sacrifice and heroism of veterans and prioritizes legal and social protection for their families. A gradual increase in allowances for veterans is expected, and the government will introduce new measures to support veterans of the Dniester war.

He emphasized that it is essential not to forget the enormous price paid for freedom, independence, and peace. Against the backdrop of Russian aggression in Ukraine and the hybrid war that our country is subjected to, the Prime Minister urged Moldovans to remain a united people.

“Unfortunately, Russia, which then brought war on the Dniester and sought to sow discord and divide people on both banks, continues attempts to destabilize our country. We, Moldovans, have never wanted war and we will not allow anyone to destroy peace and tranquility in the Republic of Moldova,” he said.

The Prime Minister laid flowers at the monument of police officer Nicolae Sotnicenco - the first hero who gave his life for the independence, sovereignty, and integrity of the Republic of Moldova and participated in the solemn rally organized at the Monument to the Fallen Heroes for the Integrity and Sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova in Coșnița. He also handed out diplomas to local veterans.

The Peace March is held annually on 14 March on the main street of Coșnița, in memory of over 40 heroes who lost their lives in Coșnița. The village was attacked by separatist forces on the night of 13-14 March 1992, and the battles lasted four months.
