Moldovan PM speaks at two European forums: advancing toward EU, strengthening country’s energy security
Moldova’s European path, security challenges and the strengthening of energy independence today were the topics addressed by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan during two international events: the EU Enlargement Summit, organized by Euronews in Brussels, and the European Energy Symposium.
At the Euronews Summit, which he attended online, the PM referred to Moldova’s progress in the European Union accession process and the goal of completing negotiations in the first quarter of 2028. The prime minister emphasized that, despite hybrid attacks, disinformation and foreign interference, Moldova continued to advance confidently along its European path.
“Moldova has been on the front line of hybrid warfare and has withstood it. For years, we have been subjected to disinformation, propaganda and interference in elections, and now these attacks are taking new forms—from cyberattacks to violations of our airspace by drones. We must recognize these risks and invest in our defense, both in the information space and in securing our airspace,” Prime Minister Tofan said.
Referring to the Transnistrian region, the prime minister emphasized that the authorities continued measures aimed at gradually integrating the region into the national economic and social space. The PM reiterated that the existence of the unresolved Transnistrian conflict should not constitute an obstacle to Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
As for European path of Moldova and Ukraine, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan emphasized that the advancement of negotiations must be based on each country’s merits and progress. “I do not believe it is useful to place Ukraine and Moldova in competition or in a race. I firmly believe that Ukraine’s progress toward European integration makes Moldova stronger, and vice versa,” the PM said.
In a video message addressed to participants in the European Energy Symposium, Vasile Tofan presented Moldova’s progress in strengthening energy security. Over the past five years, the installed renewable energy generation capacity has increased more than tenfold, exceeding 1 gigawatt, while the country has eliminated its dependence on Russian gas.
The prime minister highlighted investments in energy infrastructure, including the development of three 400 kV power lines that will strengthen connections with Romania, as well as the expansion of interconnections with Ukraine. He also underscored the importance of private investment and simplifying procedures for the development of renewable energy projects.
“We want Moldova to be a reliable energy bridge for Ukraine’s urgent needs today and a platform for its reconstruction tomorrow,” Vasile Tofan said.
The PM reiterated that European integration and the energy transition were complementary goal that will contribute to the economic development of Moldova and strengthen the security of the entire region.
