Moldovan PM says Moldova, Romania connected by future countries want to build together
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan welcomed his Romanian counterpart, Luca Niculescu, in Chisinau today. Niculescu was on his first foreign visit since taking office. The officials discussed accelerating joint infrastructure projects, constructing bridges over the Prut River, developing energy interconnections, attracting Romanian investments and Romania’s support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union. The discussions also covered the regional security situation and continued support for Ukraine.
During the joint news conference, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan thanked Romania for its constant support for Moldova and highlighted the special relationship between the two countries, built on historical, cultural and human ties, as well as on concrete projects that improve citizens’ lives.
“For Moldova, Romania is its closest friend, the country we have always known we could rely on. We are connected by the same language, history, culture, families and communities; by children who study in Romania, people who work and build businesses and those who make plans for the future together. But above all, we are connected by the future we want to build together,” Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said.
The Moldovan PM highlighted Romania’s contribution to overcoming energy crises, modernizing schools and kindergartens and developing infrastructure. At the same time, he emphasized Moldova wanted to be an active, stable and predictable partner that contributes to the security and prosperity of the region.
As for bilateral projects, Prime Minister Tofan emphasized the need to accelerate the construction of the Ungheni bridge, develop border infrastructure and advance coordinated control at Cantemir–Falciu. In the energy sector, priorities include electricity interconnections, particularly the Balti–Suceava line, and diversifying natural gas supply sources. In the context, the Moldovan PM mentioned Moldova’s intention to purchase gas from Romania once the Neptun Deep project becomes operational. The prime minister also highlighted the interest in expanding Romanian investments in industry, energy, technology and infrastructure.
A central topic of the statements concerned Moldova’s European path. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuing the reforms necessary for accession and highlighted the importance of Romania’s political support in advancing the European integration process.
“The main responsibility lies with us and we are not transferring it to anyone else: we must do our homework and demonstrate through results that Moldova is ready for accession,” Prime Minister Tofan emphasized.
For his part, Prime Minister of Romania Luca Niculescu reaffirmed Bucharest’s firm support for Moldova’s European path and development: “Romania’s support reflects a constant commitment to a more stable, safer Moldova, better connected to Romania and the European Union. Moldova’s place is undoubtedly in the European Union and Romania will be its strongest advocate in this regard.”
