Country's development begins with empowering local communities, Commissioner Marta Kos says

The sustainable development of a country largely depends on the ability of local authorities to efficiently manage the needs of communities, stated the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, during the "Enlargement Report 2025: Progress and Future Priorities of the Republic of Moldova" conference in Chisinau.

According to the European official, decentralization is one of the basic elements of state development.

"Sometimes it's not easy, but it's essential to empower local communities to take care of the areas and services that the central level cannot manage well enough. No one knows better what happens in localities than the mayors and local administrations," emphasized Marta Kos.

The commissioner mentioned that an effective decentralization process contributes to better governance, increasing the accountability of authorities, and bringing institutions closer to citizens, highlighting that the European Union will continue to support the Republic of Moldova in this path of institutional strengthening.

Chisinau's new government has announced the launch of a public administration modernization reform, aimed at strengthening the financial autonomy of municipalities and making public services more efficient. The reform provides for a better distribution of competencies between the central and local levels, transparent resource management, and the digitization of administrative processes. The executive intends that, through decentralization, local authorities will become key actors in implementing European policies at the community level.
