Moldova's cybersecurity to be strengthened with EU's support

Moldova will be able to access European funds, in order to strengthen its cybersecurity protection, after parliament ratified the agreement on the amendment of the treaty with the European Union concerning the country's participation in the Digital Europe Programme.

Through this agreement, Moldova will associate with the programme's goal aimed at cybersecurity and enhancing trust in the digital environment. This opportunity became possible with the entry into force of the EU's Cyber Solidarity Act, which underpins the establishment of the European Union's Cybersecurity Reserve.

Relevant authorities say that joining this objective will significantly contribute to enhancing defense capacities against cyber threats. In context, it is noted that, during 2021–2023, the number of cyber incidents recorded in Moldova increased by 30 per cent.

At the same time, participation in the Digital Europe 2021–2027 Programme will support the accelerated digital transformation of Moldova's economy, industry and public administration, providing direct benefits to citizens and businesses.

The programme has an overall budget of 7.6 billion euros and funds projects in key areas, such as high-performance computing, artificial intelligence advanced digital skills, system interoperability and cybersecurity. Moldova officially joined this programme in 2024.
