Moldovan magistrate to stand trial for influence peddling

A judge from the Chisinau Court of Appeal will stand trial, accused of committing the crime of influence peddling.

According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (PA), the criminal file was opened in May 2024, following PA's self-reporting, as a result of special investigative measures carried out in another criminal case.

According to the case materials, in August 2023, the judge allegedly told a trainee lawyer that he could influence members of the National Institute of Justice's admission committee and that he could facilitate the admission of the lawyer's wife for studies, with the aim of becoming a judge. In exchange for this alleged influence, the magistrate is said to have accepted money.

The magistrate does not recognize his guilt and the file was sent to the Chisinau Court for examination.

If found guilty, the magistrate risks a fine between 100,000 and 150,000 lei or up to six years in prison.
