Liaison prosecutor of Moldova to Eurojust to be selected based on competition organized by Superior Council of Prosecutors

The parliament has voted, in the first reading, a draft law regulating the work of the Liaison Prosecutor of Moldova at the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust).

The draft provides for the establishment of a clear legal framework regarding the status, duties, rights and way of operation of the Moldovan prosecutor seconded to Eurojust.

Thus, he/she will be selected through a public competition organized by the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) and appointed by the order of the Prosecutor General for a five-year term.

Mandatory requirements for candidates include at least seven years of professional experience and advanced knowledge of the English language.

According to the authors, the regulation by law of this position will strengthen the Moldova’s collaboration with Eurojust in combating organized crime and will enhance the previously initiated international cooperation.

Besides the provisions related to Eurojust, the draft introduces new measures to strengthen the independence of the Prosecutor General. Among them, there are the establishment of clear criteria for appointing prosecutors in the investigation of possible offences, expanding powers in disciplinary referral and introducing two types of evaluation for prosecution inspectors: ordinary and extraordinary.

Presently, the liaison prosecutor operates part-time, appointed by the order of the interim Prosecutor General, issued in 2024.
