Former head of Moldova's Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office fails to pass external evaluation

The commission for prosecutors’ evaluation has approved the report on the evaluation of the former head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office (PA), Veronica Dragalin. Following her resignation from the position, the evaluation concluded with a result of failure to pass the evaluation.

The decision of failure was announced by Panel B of the Commission.

According to Law No 252/2023 on the external evaluation of judges and prosecutors, a resignation submitted more than 20 days after the notification regarding the initiation of the evaluation is equivalent to not passing the evaluation process, regardless of the reasons stated.

Veronica Dragalin was officially notified on May 24, 2024, and was asked to submit her declaration of assets and personal interests for the last five years, including data about close individuals in the public system. She met the deadlines and provided additional responses to the clarifications requested by the Commission. On February 19, 2025, Dragalin submitted her resignation and her mandate ended on March 4.

The Evaluation Commission's report was sent to the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP), which is expected to issue a decision within 30 days.

The former chief prosecutor has not yet commented on the decision.

Dragalin was appointed as the head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office on August 1, 2022, and resigned on February 19, 2025, amid the recording of a draft law providing for the merging of specialized prosecutor’s offices and the creation of a new institution – the Anticorruption and Organized Crime Combating Prosecutor’s Office (PACCO).
