Moldova to implement automatic emergency services alert system for road accidents

The national emergency call service 112 is undergoing a major process of communications infrastructure’s modernization by implementing the Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) system. This is an automatic alert system for emergency services in case of road accidents, which allows the transmission of essential information about the location and severity of the road accident.

The project aims to achieve technological modernization and alignment with European standards for faster and more efficient emergency responses. Authorities estimate that the new services will be available starting from mid-2027.

An important step in the development of the project was the setting of a new modern telephone communications system, which enables the connection of the 112 Service with telephone operators' networks. This facilitates the use of modern technologies and provides more options for citizens to call the emergency service. Presently, the project is in the testing and integration phase, being 60-per cent completed.

At the same time, the Service 112 has organized and participated in working meetings with mobile phone operators. It is also in the process of collaborating with the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI), in order to adjust the national legislative framework, in accordance with the European Union's requirements for the interoperability of the eCall system.

The project is funded by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility for Transport programme. The total project budget, allocated to the entire consortium of 38 beneficiaries from eight EU member states and six associated partners from four countries, is 19.2 million euros. Half of this money is provided by the European Union. The project will be implemented as March 1, 2024, till June 30, 2027.
