Moldovan president to attend 35th anniversary of Venice Commission

President Maia Sandu will attend the ceremony dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Venice Commission on October 11th. During the event, the head of state will deliver a speech on defending democracies against new threats and lessons learned by Moldova at the recent elections.

The event will be opened by Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset and President of the Venice Commission, Claire Bazy-Malaurie, in the presence of President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella. Also attending will be President of North Macedonia Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy Antonio Tajani, along with other high-ranking officials.

The Venice Commission, officially known as the European Commission for Democracy through Law, is an advisory body of the Council of Europe specializing in constitutional law. It was established in 1990 following the fall of communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe, in order to support new democracies in drafting constitutions and legal frameworks that observe the principles of the rule of law, democracy and human rights.

The Commission is headquartered in Venice, Italy, and its composition includes independent constitutional law experts from over 60 member states, including  Moldova.
