Discover Moldova with #MOLDPRES: Architectural jewel in Pohrebea remains unused by authorities

On the left bank of the Dniester, in the village of Pohrebea in the south of the Dubăsari district, stands a holy place over 100 years old, "watched" by a family of cranes, which nested on the nearest pillar. The building is "carved" by shells and bullets - traces of the wars that can still be seen today. But we all know that after war always comes peace. We found it at Saint Alexei Church.

The legend says

St Alexei Church was built in 1912 by architect Todorov at the request of the Russian Tsar Nicholas II Romanov. According to legend, the place would be among the 12 churches that had to be built on the outskirts of the Russian governorate, for the healing of his hemophiliac son, Alexei, under the guidance of the monk Rasputin.

Conservation or restoration?

St Alexei Church suffered from the World War II (1939-1945) and the Dniester War in 1992. The upper part of the building was not preserved. The restoration of the church has been discussed for many years.

The church is the property of Coșnița village, and at the decision of the local council it was handed over to the religious community from the village of Pohrebea.

The next stage would be the design of the restoration works, but there are no financial resources for this.

The church in Pohrebea is not part of the historical monuments protected by the state. Residents insist on restoring the place and not on its preservation. Until the money is identified, we can only admire it as it is today, cracked by shells and bullets, but with a rich and equally majestic historical charge.
