World Wine Tourism Day 2025 – Moldova, the holiday of authentic wine and tourism

Moldova has reaffirmed its status as a leading wine tourism destination in Europe with the organization of the event, World Wine Tourism Day 2025 – Moldova, a day dedicated to celebrating local wine, culture and hospitality. The event, held this year on November 9 in a professional and inspirational framework, brought together tour operators, guides, destination managers, wine producers, representatives of authorities and experts from the wine tourism industry.

The main aim of the event was to promote wine tourism and strengthen the image of Moldova as an authentic European destination for wine lovers and cultural experiences. Participants had the opportunity to discover award-winning wine tastings at Château Vartely, attend topic-related presentations on wine tourism destination development and initiate dialogues and partnerships among professionals. In this way, networking was not only an opportunity for exchange of  experience, but also a catalyst for the development of local tourism.

The event’s atmosphere was complemented by a traditional Moldovan lunch, highlighting the country's authentic gastronomy and a cultural programme supported by the ensemble “Taraf Orășenesc,” which brought local music and traditions directly into the hearts of the participants.

The event was attended by His Excellency Nikolaos Krikos, Ambassador Greece  to Moldova, whose participation emphasized the importance of international collaboration and the recognition of Moldovan wine tourism on a European level.

Representatives of the National Tourism Office emphasized that wine tourism in Moldova was much more than just wine tasting. It is, above all, a story about identity, people and territory, and such events allow the consolidation of Moldova's image as a destination that combines the authenticity of traditions with local hospitality.

During the day, discussions and presentations highlighted the importance of collaboration between wine producers and tour operators, as well as the role of investment in infrastructure and marketing for attracting foreign visitors. Discussions included the development of topic-related tourist routes, inclusion of local communities and the creation of memorable experiences for tourists, such as visits to vineyards, winemaking masterclasses, or participation in traditional festivities.

The event proved that wine tourism can be a driving force for local economic development, generating revenue for communities, creating jobs and promoting Moldova's culture and traditions internationally. At the same time, the tasting and cultural experiences provided to visitors contribute to strengthening Moldova's image as an attractive and authentic European destination.

In conclusion, World Wine Tourism Day 2025 – Moldova was a day where wine, traditions, gastronomy and hospitality intertwined to create a unique experience. The event provided both professional participants and tourists with the opportunity to discover what true authentic wine tourism means and how Moldova can become a reference point for wine lovers throughout Europe and beyond.

The National Tourism Office thanked all participants and partners, noting that the next edition of the wine tourism celebration would continue to highlight Moldova's wine, traditions and hospitality, inviting visitors from all over the world to discover the beauty and authenticity of the region.

Wine Tourism in Moldova: Tradition, Experience and Economic Impact

Moldova is internationally recognized for its wine heritage, with traditions dating back over 5,000 years and more than 150 active wineries. Wine tourism is a strategic component of the tourism sector, combining wine tastings, visits to vineyards and wineries, participation in festivals and authentic cultural experiences, contributing to the promotion of national identity and local values.

Destinations and experiences: the most visited wine regions are Purcari, Cricova, Milestii Mici, Castel Mimi, Chateau Vartely, and other wineries in the north, center, and south of the country. Visitors can participate in guided tours, wine tastings and traditional gastronomy, cultural events and topic-related workshops. Wine tourism also includes nature experiences, such as hiking through vineyards or visiting nearby museums and historical sites.

Economic impact: Wine tourism generates significant revenue for the national economy, both directly and indirectly:

Direct revenues: entrance tickets to wineries, sales of wine and local products, accommodation and public catering services.

Indirect revenues: transport, guiding, local trade and craftsmanship.

Job creation: the sector contributes to the employment of locals in wineries, restaurants, accommodation units and tourist guiding.

According to estimates by the National Tourism Office, wine tourism attracts tens of thousands of tourists annually and the direct and indirect revenues generated amount to hundreds of millions of lei, contributing to regional economic development and strengthening Moldova's image as a European tourist destination.

Promotion initiatives: Events like “World Wine Tourism Day,” wine festivals, and education and promotion programmes for wine tourism (#VinulMoldovei, EU4Business in tourism) consolidate the tourist experience and attract both local and international visitors. These initiatives also support small- and medium- wineries to develop their businesses and create sustainable partnerships on the international tourism market.

Wine tourism in Moldova is not just an economic opportunity, but also a way to preserve and capitalize on cultural and natural heritage. Through investments in infrastructure, marketing and authentic experiences, Moldova strengthens its position as a top European destination for wine and culture lovers, offering tourists a unique combination of tradition, hospitality and adventure.
