Smart meters to be set in 60,000 households of Moldova till 2027
Smart meters till 2027 are set to be installed in 60,000 households of Moldova, accounting for 4.3 per cent of the total 1.4 million electricity consumers. These actions are part of a pilot smart metering project, implemented with the support of UNDP Moldova and the government of Italy.
The new meters will allow for automatic and secure measurement of energy consumption in real time, remote data reading and invoicing based on actual consumption. Thus, households will be able to benefit from differentiated electricity tariffs based on consumption hours.
According to the Ministry of Energy, 3,000 meters were set in 2024, and this year, 32,000 smart meters will be installed. An additional 25,000 meters will reach households of the country by 2026. The consumption locations where smart meters will be set under the pilot project were selected through a transparent process, ensuring national representativeness, the authorities said.
The State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Cristina Pereteatcu, made a visit to north Moldova, to discuss the results achieved in the smart metering project.
“In the smart metering project, we aim to install 13,000 meters in Edinet, Cupcini, and several surrounding villages. Currently, almost 4,000 meters have been set, and by the end of March, another 9,000 will be installed in Edinet,” the official noted.
Cristina Pereteatcu and General Director of SA RED-Nord, Iurie Beșliu, discussed measures to accelerate the setting of smart meters and the necessity to process collected data. Iurie Beșliu asked for support to implement data analysis solution, which will later be integrated into the company's current infrastructure.
At the beginning of January, the National Energy Regulatory Agency approved a decision, whereby companies and household consumers who have smart meters will pay differentiated electricity tariffs based on consumption hours.
