Moldova praised by EU experts for progress in statistics
The progress made by Moldova in aligning the national statistics system with European standards has been the subject of discussions during a meeting of Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov with representatives of Eurostat, on a visit to the country on an evaluation mission.
According to the official, the Statistics chapter is part of the Fundamental Values cluster, which underlines the importance of accurate and credible data in the process of European integration.
"Statistics play an essential role in the negotiation process for EU accession, because effective public policies can be built only on the basis of accurate, comparable and credible data," said Cristina Gherasimov.
The deputy PM noted that the discussions had focused on the progress made by Moldova in aligning the national statistical system with European standards. She expressed encouragement at the appreciation by European experts, who emphasized the positive developments in this area.
"I was pleased to hear that Eurostat experts commend our country for the progress made in the field of statistics, as also indicated in the latest Enlargement Report of the European Commission," the official underlined.
The Fundamental Values cluster includes five chapters that cover essential aspects of the rule of law and the work of a democratic society: public procurement, statistics, the judicial system and fundamental rights, justice, freedom and security, as well as financial control.
By including the Statistics chapter in this cluster, the importance of official statistics for the EU accession process is emphasized, since statistics data must be accurate, comparable and credible, in order to underpin effective public policies and to allow the monitoring of progress in line with European standards.
