Moldovan Prime Minister at Sovereignty March
About 10,000 people participated in Sovereignty March to mark 35 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty and to show their desire for a free, dignified, and European Moldova. The event was attended by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, along with the country's top leadership - President Maia Sandu and Speaker Igor Grosu.
“We celebrate the courage and determination of our people to decide their destiny, to walk the path of freedom and national dignity. We did it 35 years ago when we clearly and vigorously stated - sovereignty belongs to the people - and we reaffirmed this truth last year when we chose a European future, in democracy for our country,” said Recean.
The Prime Minister noted that June 23 also marked three years since the Republic of Moldova obtained candidate status for European Union membership.
“These two moments - the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty and the decision to follow the European path - are intertwined in a common effort to build a safe and prosperous state, where the people are sovereign and decide the country's fate,” he said.
The march began from the monument of Ion and Doina Aldea-Teodorovici, located at the central entrance of Valea Morilor Park in Chisinau, and subsequently, participants marched in column towards the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova, where 35 years ago the Declaration of Sovereignty was approved.
In her address to the event participants, President Maia Sandu emphasized the importance of national consolidation and following the European path, referring to the hybrid war that Moldova faces from the Russian Federation.
“Sovereignty, independence, tricolor united us then, but above all, our love for this land united us. Let us be united today by the same values: the desire for freedom, real and protected sovereignty, respect for national history and dignity. Let us not stop halfway, and to those who tell us we cannot, that we do not deserve, or that we will not succeed - let us show them they are wrong,” said the President of the Republic of Moldova.
“Today Moldova is on the right path. We have peace, we are strengthening democracy, we have institutions that are finally beginning to work for the people. We have friends, we have support, and we have a clear objective: Moldova in the European Union. The European Union means the guarantee of our sovereignty because it respects our right to destiny, dignity, and helps us maintain peace,” the President added.
Participants in the Sovereignty March had the opportunity to listen to the songs of national revival, performed by Cristofor Aldea-Teodorovici, Simona, Vali Boghean and Radu Dolgan with the band “Noroc.”
The Solidarity March was organized at the initiative of Maia Sandu on the occasion of marking 35 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty, on 23 June 1990.
