Gagauzia's bashkan to hear sentence on 5 August

The criminal trial involving Evghenia Guțul, the bashkan of the Gagauz autonomy, has come to an end. Chișinău Court, Buiucani branch announced that the sentence will be pronounced on August 5, 2025, following today's closing arguments, counterarguments from the parties, and the final word from the defendants.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, Evghenia Guțul and a former secretary from the Central Office of the former Political Party Shor are accused of knowingly accepting illegal funding for the party and an electoral competitor, from an organized criminal group, an offense committed in a prolonged form and as accomplices.

The prosecutors have requested a 9-year prison sentence for Guțul and the confiscation of over 40.9 million lei, identified as part of the illegal funding. For the other defendant, the prosecutors are requesting 8 years of imprisonment and the confiscation of 9.7 million lei.

In addition to prison sentences, the prosecution has also requested a ban on managing financial-accounting activities or being a member of a political party for 5 years, for both women.

The criminal case was submitted to the court in April 2024, and the trial has experienced several delays.
