The Republic of Moldova officially submitted application for European Union membership on March 3, 2022, shortly after the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This decision marked the beginning of an extensive reform process, whereby the authorities in Chisinau committed to modernizing state institutions and moving irreversibly closer to European values and standards.

Moldova's integration efforts have been recognized at the highest level by European institutions. On June 23, 2022, the European Council granted the country candidate status, thereby acknowledging its European perspective. Subsequently, on December 14, 2023, the same institution officially decided to open accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova.

The Chisinau authorities reiterated the strong commitment to continuing the reforms and have assured that by 2028, the Republic of Moldova will be ready to become a full member of the European Union.

Events dedicated to this European path, held in Chisinau, were captured by MOLDPRES photojournalists Mihai Vengher and Andrei Mardari.

Today, Chisinau will host the first Moldova - European Union summit.
