Human metapneumovirus new viral infection making havoc in the world; Moldova's National Public health Agency comes up with recommendations
Chisinau, 6 January /MOLDPRES/ - A new virus makes havoc in the world. The National Public Health Agency (ANSP) warns about the boosting of the respiratory infections globally, including triggered by the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). The children and elderly people are the most vulnerable to this virus.
The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus which is part of the family Pneumoviridae, along with the respiratory virus (RVS). Discovered in 2001, HMPV can cause infections of the upper respiratory ways to people of all ages; yet, the worst hit are children, elderly people, as well as persons with weakened immune system.
The virus can trigger symptoms similar to influenza or other acute respiratory infections, such as fever, cough, nasal congestion, difficulties of breathing (in severe cases). In most cases, the infection is mild; yet, it can evolve towards complications, such as pneumonia, especially in the vulnerable groups.
Although no case has been detected in Moldova since the beginning of this year, ANSP said that eight cases with the presence of HMPV had been recorded in Moldova in 2024.
Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is transmitted directly with respiratory secretions (cough, sneeze); touching contaminated areas; close interactions with infected people.
To prevent the respiratory infections, ANSP comes up with the following recommendations:
- washing hands with water and soap during not less than 20 seconds;
- covering the mouth and nose with a paper serviette or elbow when coughing or sneezing;
- keeping the distance from people with respiratory symptoms;
- airing rooms often and disinfecting intensely used areas;
ANSP specialists urge the citizens to appeal to physician upon the appearance of the first symptoms and avoid agglomerations.
