Ministry of Environment calls for limiting use of fireworks and analyzes strict regulation due to severe ecological impact

The Ministry of Environment is considering the possibility of introducing restrictions or even a ban on the use of fireworks and firecrackers in light of the harmful effects they have on wildlife, environment and public health.

Minister of Environment Gheorghe Hajder made the statements today. He emphasized that the institution is working to identify a 'balanced and efficient' regulatory mechanism.

According to the minister, the request for the ban on fireworks has been officially submitted to the Ministry of Environment and is currently under review.

'We are analyzing this request, but I want to make it very clear: we need to find the right formula for a potential ban or limitation of pyrotechnic effects. These have a major impact on natural resources and affect wildlife, especially urban and wild fauna,' stated Gheorghe Hajder.

The official mentioned that the ministry is preparing consultations with economic agents, relevant authorities, and environmental organizations to identify the most balanced solution.

'There is a need to develop a regulation formula that is correctly grounded. Following the consultations, we will come up with the best solution to protect the environment without unjustly affecting economic agents,' he said.

When asked if the institution has already begun work on the project, the minister mentioned that there are 'informal discussions,' but the technical documentation and preparation of normative acts are set to be accelerated.

For now, the Ministry of Environment is not considering a complete ban on the sale of fireworks, but rather new limitations or regulations.

'In the discussions held so far, there has been no decision on a total ban,' Hajder clarified.

However, the ministry advises the public to avoid using fireworks, citing the consequences for animals, environment and air quality.

He also stated that the ministry is analyzing the legislation of other countries to identify models that can be applied in the Republic of Moldova.

'Practices vary from state to state. We need to determine what is in the interest of the Republic of Moldova,' the minister said.

Earlier this week, Ombudsman Ceslav Panico and Child's Rights Ombudsman Vasile Coroi drew attention to the major risks caused by the use of pyrotechnic articles during the winter holidays. They believe that although fireworks are a festive tradition for some, they can cause discomfort, danger, and directly affect fundamental rights.
