VIDEO // Alarm raised as more Moldovans fall victim to scammers

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu warns about the rising number of phone and online scams, as a result of which more and more citizens are losing significant amounts of money. She urged citizens not to give money or banking data to strangers.

The head of state stressed that criminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods to deceive people, trying to gain victims’ trust through various scenarios.

“Thieves are well trained. They can seem convincing,” Maia Sandu said.

According to the president, scammers often pose as relatives, bank employees, investors or even representatives of law enforcement bodies. In some cases, they even resort to fake video materials, created with the help of artificial intelligence, in order to make their messages more credible.

“Only thieves ask for money, passwords or offer quick profits over the phone or the internet,” Maia Sandu warned.

The president urged citizens not to provide personal or banking data and to immediately end such calls.

“Do not speak to strangers who ask you for money or your bank code. Hang up the phone.”

She also recommended verifying information through the official phone numbers of institutions and encouraging family discussions about these risks, in order to prevent new fraud cases.
