Moldova's National Public Health Agency confirms imported case of monkeypox: infected person under medical supervision

The National Public Health Agency (ANSP) has confirmed an imported case of infection with the monkeypox virus (MPXV) in Moldova. The case was diagnosed through laboratory tests carried out at ANSP’s National Reference Laboratory. The infected person is under medical supervision.

According to ANSP, the infected person sought medical assistance with symptoms of fever, general weakness and skin rashes. At present, the patient remains under observation, and his condition is described as satisfactory. ANSP specialists have launched an epidemiological investigation and are applying the necessary measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

“The last two cases of monkeypox infection in Moldova were reported in 2022 and were imported cases. The virus is not endemic in Europe and is recorded only through import,” ANSP specified.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), in recent months, MPXV cases have been reported in Romania and the Czech Republic. The virus is transmitted through close direct contact with an infected person or through contact with contaminated objects.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, chills, weakness, swollen lymph nodes, skin rashes and lesions on mucous membranes (mouth, nose, throat, or digestive tract), as well as muscle and back pain.

ANSP recommends that the population observe hygiene rules, avoid close contact with suspected or confirmed cases, avoid contact with wild animals and contaminated materials and seek immediate medical attention, if symptoms appear.
