Orthodox Christians enter Easter Fast

The Orthodox Christians are entering the Easter Fast, the longest and strictest fast of the entire year. Great Lent precedes the Resurrection of the Lord and lasts seven weeks. During this period, believers are called not only to follow a special dietary regimen, but also to fast spiritually, through prayer and good deeds.

The Easter Fast is a time of spiritual preparation, inner cleansing and drawing closer to God. From a dietary perspective, believers give up animal products—meat, milk and eggs—and consume dishes based on vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes.

There are, however, days when fish is permitted, such as the Annunciation and Palm Sunday, when church rules allow a slight easing of the fast. Beyond dietary restrictions, priests remind the faithful that the true meaning of Great Lent is a change of heart, forgiveness, charity and inner peace, as they await the great feast of the Resurrection.

In 2026, Orthodox Easter will be celebrated on April 12.
