Moldova's Intelligence and Security Service, Police, ANRCETI ask to block over 400 TikTok channels
The authorities of Moldova are boosting measures to combat misinformation in the digital space, specifically targeting social networks with a significant impact on public opinion. In recent weeks, the National Police, the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI), and the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) have submitted official requests to block 443 TikTok channels identified as being involved in spreading false information with the potential for social destabilization and threats to national security.
According to the Police, 98 channels promote false narratives regarding the alleged involvement of Moldova in the conflict in Ukraine; 12 channels were distributing messages about so-called preparations to rig parliamentary elections; 128 channels targeted defamatory attacks on public figures; 97 channels promoted politically charged messages, inciting to hatred and violence; six channels spread conspiracy theories about the trafficking of Ukrainian minors.
According to the cited source, so far, 59 of the targeted channels have been blocked. In total, the targeted accounts have over 1.2 million followers and more than 4.5 million views.
The relevant authorities urge the population to verify the information accessed online, consult only official sources and be aware of the risks of misinformation. The Police, SIS, and ANRCETI announce that they will continue coordinated actions, in order to reduce the effects of digital manipulation and protect citizens.
