Voting process ends at new local elections, local referendum in Moldova

A total of 6,608 voters participated in the new local elections and local referendum held in seven localities of Moldova on November 1. All 12 polling stations have completed their activity, while voter turnout figures are preliminary.

According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), the highest voter turnout was recorded in the village of Hasnasenii Mari, Drochia district, where 48.49 per cent of registered voters participated. It was followed by the village of Chirsova in the Autonomous Territorial Unit (UTA) of Gagauzia, with 40.27 per cent, and the village of Cairaclia in Taraclia district, with 38.23 per cent.

In the town of Costesti, Rascani district, the voter turnout stood at 37.67 per cent, while in the village of Delacau, Anenii Noi district, where a local referendum was held, 35.21 per cent of voters cast their ballots. In the village of Tomai in UTA Gagauzia, the turnout was 28.99 per cent, while in Novosiolovca, Taraclia district, it reached 22.65 per cent.

According to the Electoral Code, new local elections and local referendums are considered valid, if at least one-quarter of the number of people registered on the electoral rolls participate in the vote.

If the elections are declared invalid, the CEC will organize repeat voting within two weeks, based on the same electoral rolls and with the same candidates and electoral bodies.

The Commission is expected to receive the protocols summarizing the results. Until the original documents are received from the lower-level electoral bodies, the data presented remain preliminary.
