VIDEO // Remote medical consultations for village residents; Moldovan Health Ministry launches pilot project

Patients in rural areas will be able to benefit from the expertise of specialist doctors, without having to travel to other districts or to Chisinau. The Health Ministry is testing a model of remote medical consultations that will allow family doctors to present cases to specialists and receive recommendations for treatment.

According to Health Minister Alexandru Gasnas, for patients in villages, a consultation with a specialist can mean hours spent on the road, additional expenses and an effort that is not always necessary.

“For patients in villages, a consultation with a specialist can mean hours on the road, expenses, and an effort that is not always necessary. Remote consultations can offer us an alternative,” the minister said.

Under this model, the patient visits the medical institution in his/her locality, while the family doctor presents the case to a specialist from the district or Chisinau, transmitting the relevant medical information and test results. The specialist analyzes the data, monitors the patient’s progress, contributes to adjusting the treatment and provides the necessary recommendations.

Thus, patients can benefit from the expertise of doctors from other institutions without the specialist being physically present in their locality. The model aims to reduce travel and expenses and facilitate access to specialized medical services.

The minister said that the initiative had passed the preparation stage and reached practical testing. The necessary equipment has been purchased, working guidelines have been developed, medical staff have been trained and simulations have been conducted.

“A pilot project is starting in Causeni to see what works in practice, what needs to be adjusted and what we can improve, so that we can expand this model nationwide,” Alexandru Gasnas said.

The results of the pilot project will allow evaluating how remote consultations are organized and identifying the solutions needed to develop this service.

“The place where you live should not be an obstacle to accessing medical expertise,” the health minister emphasized.
