Moldova's Medical University Nicolae Testemitanu to award honorific title Honorary Doctor Honoris Causa academician James Edward Rothman

The State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF) Nicolae Testemitanu will award the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Academician James Edward Rothman. He is a Sterling Professor of Cellular Biology at Yale University, a professor in Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University, USA, a professor at the Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London, UK, and a Nobel Prize Laureate in Medicine (2013).

The event will take place on October 9, this year, starting from 14:30, in the Multivalent Hall, USMF’s Sociocultural Complex (Nicolae Testemitanu Street, 25). The event will be attended by members of the University Senate, department heads and subdivisions, professors, students, resident doctors, PhD students and representatives of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM).

The honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa is awarded to Academician Rothman as a token sign recognition and high appreciation for his significant contribution to the development of medical sciences, the strengthening of scientific schools in cellular biology and molecular medicine, the training of dozens of generations of researchers and international academic collaboration, including with the ASM.

Professor James Edward Rothman is known as one of the founders of modern cellular biology. He has contributed to elucidating the molecular mechanisms of intracellular transport through vesicles and to formulating the SNARE hypothesis, which revolutionized research into cellular secretion processes and the transmission of nerve signals. For these achievements, he was awarded numerous international prizes, including the Lasker Award for Basic Research (2002), the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience (2010) and the Nobel Prize in Medicine (2013).
