Moldovan wines to have clearer labels
Government of the Republic of Moldova approved new labeling rules for wines, aimed at increasing transparency and protecting consumers. For the first time, wine product labels will include a full list of ingredients and information about potential allergens, in accordance with international standards applied in European Union countries.
The new requirements aim to ensure that every consumer can clearly understand the composition of their chosen wine, avoiding risks related to allergies or food intolerances. The information will be presented in an accessible format, and producers will have the option to use standardized icons or QR codes for additional details. Furthermore, technical terms will be simplified to make labels more readable and user-friendly.
“The project also provides clarifications for producers, establishing uniform rules for indicating ingredients, including for flavored wines, where the technological process involves additional components. According to the decision, adaptation to the new requirements will be done in stages. Producers will have three months to update labels and adjust internal processes. At the same time, stocks of wines produced prior will need to be declared to the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) within 30 days of the new rules coming into effect. These wines will be allowed to be sold until stocks are exhausted, but no later than August 31, 2027,” explains the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry.
By implementing the changes, the authorities aim to strengthen consumer confidence in local products and create a coherent and competitive regulatory framework for the Moldovan wine sector — one of the pillars of the national agri-food economy, the ministry said.
