OSCE Mission to Moldova in partnership with NGO EcoContact and NGO Ecospectru organized an informative session in Tiraspol dedicated to managing dangerous chemicals and exchanging information among experts. The event, conducted in a hybrid format, gathered over 60 participants from academia, research institutes, relevant organizations, and civil society, providing an important platform for dialogue and technical training.

During the session, methods and procedures for managing waste containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) were presented, focusing on the stages of collection, packaging, transport, and disposal in compliance with international standards outlined in Stockholm and Basel Conventions. Participants analyzed processes implemented in existing projects and discussed case studies on the safe handling of dangerous chemicals.

“An important moment of the event was the screening of two video materials produced within the OSCE project dedicated to eliminating toxic substances. The materials illustrated the process by which approximately 265 tons of hazardous substances, including PCB, were collected from ten locations on both banks of the Dniester and transported under controlled conditions to an authorized hazardous waste incineration facility in Germany. The project was made possible thanks to funding provided by several participating OSCE states – the United States of America, Germany, Ireland, and Norway,” explains EcoContact.

The initiative contributes to reducing environmental risks, protecting public health, and strengthening cooperation among specialists, serving as an example of cross-river joint efforts for chemical safety, according to the cited source.

The event in Tiraspol is part of the extended activities of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, aimed at increasing awareness, exchanging expertise, and developing local capacities in hazardous substances management – for the benefit of communities on both banks of the Dniester.
