New elections to be held in Moldova's Gagauz autonomy on March 22, 2026 – date set by region's People's Assembly

The People's Assembly of the Gagauz autonomy has set the date of elections for the position of Bashkan (governor) and for the completion of the autonomy's elective bodies. The voting will take place on March 22, 2026, and if necessary, a second round is scheduled for April 5, 2026.

The decision was adopted by a majority of votes – 15 out of the 28 deputies present.

The setting of the election date comes after more weeks of deadlock and consultations within the People's Assembly, in the context of the need to relaunch the democratic processes in the autonomy.

At the same meeting, the lawmakers accepted the resignation of Dmitrii Constantinov from the position of President of the People's Assembly. Following Gheorghii Leiciu's withdrawal, Nikolai Ormanji was elected as the interim president of the Gagauz legislature.

Two weeks ago, Dmitrii Constantinov announced that he was stepping down from the position of president of the People's Assembly for personal reasons.
