Moldovan parliament joins national campaign, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence; parliament building lit in orange

The parliament building on November 25 was lit in orange, when the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is marked. Orange is a color used internationally as a symbol of the fight against violence against women. Thus, the parliament joined the national campaign, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

This year, the campaign is held under the motto, Moldova without Violence, with the hashtag #NOEXCUSES for digital violence. It aims to promote a culture of respect in both online and offline environments, encouraging behaviors based on dignity, responsibility and empathy. Statistics data shows that 85 per cent of women worldwide have been victims of this form of abuse. The campaign today was launched with a national manifesto in the cities of Chisinau, Cahul and Balti. People from across the country participated in the events.

Moldova's legislation has been recently amended with additional protective measures for women against all forms of violence and harassment, including the ones manifested through digital means. Starting from February 1, 2026, the penalty for online violence will consist of a fine of up to 50,000 lei, community service hours or even up to two years in prison.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign unfolds on November 25 – December 10, 2025.
