VIDEO // Prime Minister: We want to have as many families as possible living in prosperity in Moldova

On International Day of Families, we celebrate the family as a fundamental element of our communities and we desire to have more happy families living in prosperity in the Republic of Moldova.  Prime Minister Dorin Recean conveyed the message today.

According to the Prime Minister, during the four years of governance, the authorities have supported families in the country and improved living conditions through concrete measures.

"We have created and renovated 40 childcare groups. We have renovated 137 kindergartens through the European Village Program. Over 230,000 people benefited from the Easter Aid: families with children under 5 years old received 1,500 lei for each child; families with children with disabilities – 5,000 lei each; and families with adults with severe disabilities – also 5,000 lei each," said Recean.

Moreover, the one-off birth allowance was increased to 21,350 lei, and for children under the age of two, a monthly allowance of one thousand lei was introduced. Meanwhile, students in secondary school will benefit from free meals starting on 1 September 2025. Currently, about 135,000 school children already benefit from free meals.

"We adopted a law to create alternative childcare services, including at the workplace. We provided parents with the possibility to share the childcare leave between mother and father, and mothers can work during maternity leave without losing the allowance. We included legal provisions granting the right to a flexible work schedule," he said.

The official added that the authorities have extended and made more flexible paternity leave, giving fathers more time with newborns and introduced the option for mothers who choose to return to work earlier to receive a monthly allowance equal to 90% of the salary, for one year.

Another support measure for families is the provision of heating and electricity compensations during the cold season.

To help families purchase a home, the authorities launched the First Home PLUS Program, giving over 2000 families the chance to buy their own house.

Today, the Republic of Moldova marks International Day of Families. The event is celebrated through a series of activities organized across the country. They have been included in an Action Plan approved by the Government on Wednesday.

The document includes over 80 initiatives and actions. They are organized by central and local authorities and will take place until the end of May, including round tables, theme workshops, shows, information campaigns, competitions organized at the local level.

This year, the events will be held under the theme Family Policies for Sustainable Development, focusing on social inclusion, work-life balance and intergenerational solidarity.
