Moldovan athlete becomes world champion, marking historic first for para-judo in Moldova
Moldovan athlete Ion Basoc won the gold medal at the IBSA World Championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia. He became world champion, marking a historic first for para-judo in the Republic of Moldova.
This is the first gold medal won by a representative of the Republic of Moldova at IBSA World Championships.
Ion Basoc secured four victories in the J1, +90 kg category, defeating opponents from Spain, Mongolia, Brazil, and Uzbekistan.
In the final, the Moldovan athlete defeated Brazil's Wilians Silva de Araújo, the opponent who had prevented him from winning a medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and at the previous edition of the World Championships.
At the competition in Tbilisi, the Republic of Moldova was represented by eight athletes. Vadim Crețu finished ninth in the J1, up to 70 kg category, while Nicolai Bondarev ranked seventh in the J2, up to 90 kg category.
