Three athletes from Moldova become beach wrestling world champions
Three athletes from the Republic of Moldova won gold medals at the World University Beach Wrestling Championships, held in the city of Figueira da Foz, Portugal.
As a result, the Republic of Moldova finished first in beach wrestling, which was included in the World University Championships program for the first time.
The three world champions are Ion Berghi, in the under-70 kg category, and Gabriel Ojog, in the under-80 kg category, both students at Moldova State University, as well as Traian Căpățînă, in the under-90 kg category, a student at the Technical University of Moldova.
Upon returning home, the athletes were welcomed at the airport by family members, friends and colleagues.
“We congratulate our athletes on their achievements. The three gold medals and the Republic of Moldova’s first-place finish demonstrate the talent, hard work and perseverance of our young people,” said Sergiu Gurin, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Research.
The World University Championships took place in the city of Figueira da Foz, Portugal, and brought together athletes from 31 countries.
