Polish cyclist Radosław Frątczak won the first stage of the 2026 Tour of Romania cycling race, held for the first time outside Romania’s borders, on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. Frątczak covered the approximately 160-kilometre distance in 3 hours, 35 minutes and 42 seconds, in a race that brought together around 130 athletes from 16 countries.
The first stage started in the square of Maria Bieșu National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Chișinău. The route continued through Ialoveni, Hâncești, Strășeni, Călărași and Ungheni.
Twenty-three teams took part in the competition, while the Republic of Moldova was represented by six riders. The best result among the Moldovan athletes was achieved by Ghennadii Morgun, who finished in 30th place.
Radosław Frątczak won the first stage, finishing the race in 3:35:42.
The inclusion of the Republic of Moldova in the Tour of Romania route is a first for the competition. The 2026 edition is the 58th and comprises five stages, during which the cyclists will cover a total of about 800 kilometres.
After the stage held in the Republic of Moldova, the competition continues on Romanian territory. The finish of the 58th edition of the Tour of Romania is scheduled for Sunday in Bucharest.
