Universal Day of Romanian Blouse // President: Authentic traditions are not lost with passing time

The Republic of Moldova is marking today the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse, a celebration dedicated to one of the most representative symbols of Romanian cultural identity and heritage. On this occasion, President Maia Sandu conveyed a message in which she highlighted the value of the blouse as a defining element of national traditions and culture.

The head of state emphasized that the blouse is worn wherever the Romanian language is spoken and felt, representing a bridge between generations and an expression of the continuity of authentic values.

“On the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse, we celebrate one of the most beautiful symbols of our identity. Worn wherever the Romanian language is spoken and felt, the blouse reminds us that authentic traditions are not lost with the passing of time, but continue to inspire, to bring people closer together, and to find their place in every generation,” said Maia Sandu.

The President also noted the role of the artisans who preserve and pass on this traditional craft, contributing to the safeguarding of cultural heritage.

“Each blouse is an expression of the mastery, creativity, and sensitivity of the artisans who carry this craft forward, evoking the heritage of the communities where it came to life. Let us wear the blouse with joy and keep in our hearts everything it represents,” mentioned the head of state.

The message was accompanied by a photograph from 1959, from the collection of ethnographer and researcher Varvara Buzilă, depicting the traditional welcoming of guests with bread and salt, an image that reflects the richness of cultural heritage and folk customs in the Romanian cultural space.

The Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse is celebrated annually on June 24, together with the festival of Sânziene, and promotes the traditional Romanian costume as a symbol of cultural identity, folk creativity, and the bond between generations.
