Prime Minister at Diaspora Forum: We must improve people’s lives and restart engines of economy

The Government’s major responsibility is to improve people’s lives and restart the engines of the economy in order to ensure the country’s development. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan made the statement at the Diaspora Forum, held today in Chișinău. He said that the authorities are preparing a broad package of measures aimed at stimulating economic development, encouraging investment, and restoring citizens’ confidence in the future of the Republic of Moldova.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this objective cannot be achieved through statements alone, but through the implementation of a large number of concrete actions that generate visible results for the population and the business environment.

“The Government’s major responsibility is to make citizens’ lives easier. We need to change the mechanics of this country so that production starts here, entrepreneurs grow, remain optimistic, start creating jobs, and invest in new production lines. I must admit that lately I have seen a bit of pessimism. And if you ask me what the main goal of the government is, it is to bring people’s optimism back. But optimism does not respond to a single phrase. Optimism responds to dozens or hundreds of actions that we take. And we want to carry out dozens, hundreds, thousands of actions that will restore optimism so that Moldovans believe in this country and can say that Moldova is moving in the right direction,” the Prime Minister said.

According to the official, the Government will act along two main lines. The first concerns systemic reforms, such as reducing administrative inspections, simplifying the tax system, and aligning the education system with the needs of the labor market. The second line involves targeted interventions to unblock investment projects. In the Prime Minister’s view, speeding up a limited number of key projects can have a significant impact on the national economy.

“There are two types of measures that every government takes, and we want to implement both. The first are systemic changes: having as few inspections as possible, a tax system that is easy to administer and correctly focused, and an education system that trains the specialists needed by the labor market. These are decisions that do not necessarily have an overnight effect, but together they create a kind of fertile ground in which a country can flourish, and entrepreneurs who invest can thrive. The second group of decisions, which we must use now as actively as possible, are manual interventions. We have many projects that are at a stage where something gets blocked. We are still a small country; by unblocking 20–25 projects, you can already create very high added value. With such manual interventions, we need to restart the engines of the economy,” Tofan noted.

The Diaspora Forum is taking place today in Chișinău, bringing together Moldovans from all over the world to share ideas, discuss the future of the Republic of Moldova, and identify ways to become actively involved in the country’s development.

The Diaspora Forum is organized as part of Diaspora Days 2026, which are held throughout August under the slogan “Wherever we are, Moldova unites us!”. The program includes events dedicated to young people, professionals, leaders of diaspora associations, and all citizens interested in contributing to the development of the Republic of Moldova. The activities are organized by the Diaspora Relations Bureau within the State Chancellery.
