BTA: Trend of Falling Water Levels in the Danube Persists, Hydrological Situation Remains Difficult
The trend of falling water levels in the Danube continues across the entire Bulgarian section of the river, the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River (EAEMDR) reported on Saturday. Data as of August 8 show a drop of 5 cm at the Ruse gauging station. The recorded river level is 109 cm below the reference zero. The hydrological situation remains difficult.
All restrictions on the draught of vessels remain in force along the entire stretch of the river. At present, there are no vessels stranded either within or outside the navigation channel. On Friday morning, a self-propelled vessel encountered difficulties passing through the area around Belene Island. It passed through the section later in the day.
EAEMDR Executive Director Ivelin Zanev reported on Tuesday that many vessels are waiting to pass through the most critical sections of the Danube River because of low water levels, while several have run aground outside the navigation channel. The minimum measured depth at Belene and Batin was around 1.6 metres, while in the other sections it was 1.8 metres or more.
