VIDEO // Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line close to completion: 99 per cent of construction, installation works carried out
The construction of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau Overhead Power Line is close to completion. Overall progress exceeds 90 per cent and construction and installation work is about 99 per cent complete. Thus, all 507 foundations of the Line have been made, 507 towers have been assembled, 505 are already mounted and 150 km of conductor and optical fiber have been stretched.
Meanwhile, at the Chisinau 330 kV Electric Station, modernization work has reached 78 per cent, with works for installing the primary equipment in full swing, according to a today’s announcement by the Energy Project Implementation Unit (UCIPE).
At the same time, at the Vulcanesti 400 kV Electric Station, expansion work has reached 57 per cent, with the installation of metal frameworks being completed along with the delivery of equipment.
“Behind every tower and every kilometer of the line lie months of work, planning, and coordination. From technical design, land expropriation, material testing, to the construction itself, every stage is essential and carefully controlled, in order to make sure that the project meets the highest quality standards. The ensuring of quality is fundamental, given the strategic importance of this project for Moldova and its energy security,” said UCIPE Director Ruslan Surugiu.
The line has a total length of 157 km, crossing 35 localities in eight districts, connecting the Vulcanesti 400 kV Electric Station with the Chisinau 330 kV Electric Station. It will be able to carry up to 630 MVA of power, equivalent to over 50 per cent of the country's peak period needs.
The line includes 507 metal towers, with a total weight of over 10,000 tons, equivalent to the Eiffel Tower. The tallest tower is 48 meters, while the shortest is 27 meters.
For construction, over 1,500 km of conductors (approximately 1,900 tons) and 157 km of optical fiber are used, which will ensure the safe transmission of data between electric stations.
The construction works for the Vulcanesti–Chisinau Overhead Power Line effectively began in April 2024 and are part of the Power System Development Project, funded by the World Bank Group. Its value is 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros is for the construction of the Line.
The construction of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line is a project of strategic importance for Moldova’s energy security. The new power line will allow the transport of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chisinau, without passing through the Moldovan power plant located in the Transnistrian region.
