Moldova has been elected, for the first time, as a member of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The elections took place at the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference. The membership will be valid for the 2025–2029 term.

The Executive Board is one of the main governing bodies of UNESCO.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi said that this election confirmed the international recognition of Moldova's efforts to promote quality education, protect cultural heritage and foster science and innovation.

“The mandate at the UNESCO Executive Board is an important opportunity to contribute, alongside our partners, to strengthening the values of an open society based on knowledge and mutual respect,” said Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi.

The official also said that this position would give Moldova the opportunity to directly contribute to the leadership of this important organization and to share its experience in such areas as education in crisis situations, combating misinformation and research.

“Moldova will be able to contribute and also learn, gaining new benefits, including promoting and increasing the number of material and intangible UNESCO objectives in our country. At the same time, a priority for our country is the preservation and promotion of the Gagauz language. According to a UNESCO report, this language is endangered, and Moldova is firmly committed to preserving the Gagauz culture and identity as an integral part of Moldova,” emphasized Mihai Popsoi.

Additionally, with this mandate, Moldova aims to actively contribute to strengthening international cooperation in the organization's fields of activity and to promoting intercultural dialogue and free access to information, announced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
