Alternative for fuel supply to Chișinău Airport following sanctions on Lukoil company

In light of the inclusion of the Lukoil group on the sanctions list imposed by the United States and the United Kingdom, Moldovan authorities are closely monitoring the fuel supply situation for Eugen Doga International Airport - Chișinău. Currently, Lukoil-Moldova is the sole supplier of kerosene for the airport and holds the entire storage and aircraft refueling infrastructure.

According to Radu Marian, the chairman of the parliamentary committee on economy, budget, and finance, several local and international companies have shown interest in taking over Lukoil's fuel supply operations. The parliamentarian emphasized that authorities are verifying that future operators comply with the sanctions regime and do not endanger the country's energy security.

'Several options are being analyzed, and we will make every effort to avoid any complicated situation. The kerosene market has alternatives, and existing stocks are sufficient for the near future,' stated Radu Marian on Friday.

The government has set up a working group evaluating the transaction and potential buyers, aiming to ensure continuity of supply and prevent any disruption to flight schedules.

American and British sanctions on Lukoil entities come into effect on November 21, 2025, as part of the Western response to the regional geopolitical context. Moldovan authorities have sent official notifications to the Civil Aviation Authority and the airport, mentioning the necessity of adopting preventive measures to maintain kerosene supply. Thus, the Republic of Moldova is strengthening its preparedness for possible changes in aviation fuel supply, ensuring that the airport and air traffic will not be affected, despite the restrictions imposed on the current operator.
